LAURIE FRIEDMAN, PRESIDENT, SYA GROUP, INC.
Ms. Friedman has over 20 years experience in emergency management and planning, which includes consulting, program development, training, technical evaluation and regulatory monitoring. Since 1994, Ms. Friedman has owned and managed a Women Business Enterprise (WBE) consulting firm in San Francisco. SYA Group, Inc. provides specialized emergency management solutions including web-enabled training programs; plan writing, response exercises, and conference management.
SYA Group, Inc. clients include, City and County of San Francisco Mayor's Office of Emergency Services, Port of San Francisco, the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, the Monterey County Redevelopment Agency, the National Park Service/Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), the American Red Cross, the Santa Clara County Department of Public Health, San Francisco International Airport, San Francisco Water Department, and East Bay Municipal Utility District.
From 1989 to 1994, Ms. Friedman worked as a Senior Planner at EQE International, a seismic engineering firm, where her responsibilities included providing consultant services to corporate and local government clients for the development of emergency response plans, business recovery plans, and earthquake hazard mitigation strategies.
Following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and the 1994 Northridge earthquake, Ms. Friedman assisted major medical centers and county agencies in writing over 30 successful hazard mitigation grant proposals.
From 1982 to 1989, Ms. Friedman was the Earthquake Program Manager for the Federal Emergency Management Agency Region IX. She coordinated federal preparedness and mitigation efforts with California, Nevada, Arizona, and Hawaii and provided oversight for implementation of federally funded statewide preparedness projects.
Ms. Friedman holds a Masters Degree from the Lila Acheson Wallace School of Community Service and Public Affairs at the University of Oregon. Following graduate studies, Ms. Friedman was selected to serve as a Presidential Management Intern from 1980 to 1982.
